Proof of Financial Support

^ top

New students applying from overseas and seeking a student (F-1) visa or F-1 students transferring to the Institute from other schools must provide documents proving sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses and health insurance for the period of study. This requirement may be satisfied as follows:

  1. a bank or brokerage statement in your name or in the name(s) of your parents. This statement must show sufficient US$ equivalent funds to support all expenses relating to your studies. If a parent's bank statement is used, the parent must provide a signed statement that these funds on deposit will be used to support your studies.
  2. a letter from a bank certified by a bank official stating that you or your parents have a bank balance sufficient to support your studies. This letter must show a minimum amount in US$ equivalent on deposit to support all expenses relating to your studies.
  3. a scholarship letter from an educational institution, or a government agency stating that you or your parents have a bank balance sufficient to support your studies. This letter must show sufficient US$ equivalent funding to support all expenses relating to your studies.
  4. an affidavit of support from a relative or sponsor in the United States. This affidavit must show sufficient US$ income and resources to support all expenses relating to your studies. A form I-134 Affidavit of Support is available on the Department of Homeland Security website www.uscis.gov.

A combination the above methods is also acceptable.

Estimating Expenses

^ top

Considerations in calculating the approximate total funds that you will require for study include your planned length of stay, tuition and fees, living expenses and health insurance. Provision needs to be made for yourself and any dependents who will accompany you. We recommend that you estimate your (individual) expenses as follows, based upon 2007/2008 academic year prices:

Eight-week Academic Term
Tuition and Fees $2,712
Living Expense $1,500
Health Insurance $320
TOTAL $4,532
Fall Semester
Tuition and Fees $5,424
Living Expense $3,000
Health Insurance $640
TOTAL $9,064
Fall and Spring Semesters
Tuition and Fees $11,168
Living Expense $6,750
Health Insurance $1,440
TOTAL $19,358
Six-week Summer Term
Tuition and Fees $2,262
Living Expense $1,500
Health Insurance $320
TOTAL $4,082

For accompanying family members, we recommend budgeting in living expenses an additional $90 per week of planned stay for spouse plus $35 per week per child. Childcare expenses such as babysitting and/or day care are additional costs. Health insurance (see below) is required for all family members.

Health Insurance Requirement

^ top

Health insurance covering care in the U.S. is required of all students and accompanying dependents. Health insurance may be purchased upon arrival. Purchasing health insurance at the English Language Institute will cost $60-170 per month per person or family member, depending upon ages of those covered and the type of plan chosen.

Applying for a Student Visa

^ top

Prospective full-time students applying from countries outside the U.S. will be issued a Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status (Form I-20A/B). This form must be taken to an American Consulate to obtain an F-1 Student Visa. For information on applying for a student visa, see the student visa section on the Department of State website at travel.state.gov. Prior to your visa interview appointment, you will need to need to pay a SEVIS I-901 Fee. The procedure for paying the SEVIS fee may be found at www.fmjfee.com.
