The Institute
Founded in 1977, the English Language Institute prepares international
students seeking admission to Virginia Tech and other U.S.
colleges and universities through a rigorous program of intensive
English training. Through its work, the Institute increases the
quality and diversity of the Virginia Tech student population and
enables outstanding international candidates to meet English
language admission requirements.
In addition to its intensive English language program, the Institute
offers courses in university preparation, TOEFL® preparation, academic
and professional writing and academic preparation courses
for admitted international graduate students.

Virginia Tech's College of Engineering and College of Human Resources and
Education have graduate programs ranked in the top 10 nationwide,
according to U.S. News and World Report's 2008 America's Best Graduate Schools.
The Pamplin MBA program consistently appears in the Financial Times rankings
of the world's top 100 graduate business schools.
An ever-increasing number of international students are selecting Virginia
Tech for academic study because of its national and international reputation
in engineering, architecture, business, education, agriculture, arts and
sciences, human resources, forestry and wildlife resources, and veterinary medicine.
The university's centers for research in such areas as fiber optics, power electronics,
adhesion science, anaerobic microbiology, intelligent materials, robotics, polymers, and
composite materials provide learning laboratories for international scholars and students.
The university community is set in Blacksburg, a small town close to scenic and historic
